'Tis the time for New Year's Resolution !

New Year's eve is around the corner and a few of us must be busy making new resolutions for 2016. It is a personal decision to achieve something on personal level and we always want our goals to come out better than last year. This is where New Year's resolutions come into play.

I surveyed about 20 friends and relatives of mine, I found the following top 5 resolutions which are shared by almost all of them:


1. Get organized
2. Get back on the fitness track
3. Quit Smoking/Drinking
4. Save more
5. Learn something new and exciting


According to the university of Scranton, roughly about 8% of people achieve success in their new year's resolution whereas 92% don't.

You'll be surprised to find that the top 5 new year's resolutions and 5 commonly broken new year's resolutions are almost the same. Therefore, it is most likely that the positivity in your ambition will result in failure. Research says that most of the resolutions die by the end of JANUARY.

  1. Be Practical 
    Don't think of any resolution which is not practical to achieve. Planning unrealistic resolutions will not going to help. If you are a party person and resolute to stay away from drinks is somewhat seems hard to achieve.
  2. Work on one at a time
    if you have so many resolutions or goals set up for yourself for the new year then it is better to work on one at a time. Some of your goals may be contradictory. For instance, if you have a resolution of saving money and clear all the debts but on the other hand, you have set up a goal of travelling different places as well, they might not go together. It is always better to work on one goal at a time.
  3. Plan ahead 
    if you are reading this post and just thought of making new year's resolution,  you are probably too late. Last minute made resolutions may depend on your mood and attitude on that particular day. You may want something different and better out of you. Planning ahead will make you think over your weaknesses or strengths which you'd like to get rid of or sharpen respectively. 
  4. Don't punish yourself
    If, somehow, you are not meeting your goals due to physical, financial, social or any other reason, punishing yourself is not the solution. Don't let it hard for you. For instance, working out too much in the gym to make up for the lost fitness regime is not a healthy practice if you have losing weight as one of your resolutions. Accept the incremental change and more will eventually follow.
  5. Keep trying 
    As Thomas A. Edison said," Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." If somehow you are not succeeding in your resolution as 92% of people don't (referring to the University of Scranton research), the only way to keep the hope alive is to keep trying.
