“The wife is always the last to know, right?” ― Shari Lapena, The Couple Next Door
Review
When I decided to read this book from my backlist titles, all I knew was I had been preparing myself for a wild ride of betrayal, lies and crime. Written by a local author, Shari Lapena, The Couple Next Door is her suspense debut.
It all starts after a dinner party next door when Marco and Anne leave their daughter, a six-month-old baby sleeping a crib to attend the party only to find her missing on their return.
The characters are very unlikeable. I understand that all the characters are not supposed to be likeable by the reader but I was mad at most of them. I tend to believe that they are developed in a way for a reader to hate them. The extent of the deception and swindling churned me to the core.
I read this book in one sitting. It is a fast-paced book with suspense revealing a lot of secrets regularly to keep the reader intrigued. Although it is an amazing suspense book, I feel there was something amiss in the plot as it felt feigned. I confess that when I read thrillers, I tend to start guessing the twists but this book kept me glued to the couch and I put it down only after finishing it.
Not the best of the narration I have ever read or the plot construction but if a book is a page-turner, it does its job fairly well as a thriller. I was engaged the whole time reading it. A debut novel which I would recommend if you are looking for a thriller worth your money.
